A good body shaper is an investment – and with the right care, it keeps its stretch, shape and support for much longer. Washing it the wrong way (hot water, harsh detergent, the dryer) is the fastest way to ruin the elastic. Here's how to wash and care for your shapewear so it lasts.
1. Hand Wash Whenever Possible
Hand washing is the gentlest option for shapewear.
- Fill a bucket or basin with cool or lukewarm water – never hot.
- Add a small amount of mild detergent or gentle liquid soap.
- Soak for 10–15 minutes, then gently squeeze the fabric. Don't scrub or twist.
- Rinse in clean, cool water until no soap remains.
2. If You Use a Washing Machine
- Close all zips and hooks first so they don't snag other clothes.
- Put the shaper in a mesh laundry bag.
- Use the gentle or delicate cycle with cold water.
- Wash with similar light fabrics – not with heavy jeans or towels.
3. Never Wring It Out
Twisting stretches the elastic fibres and the built-in rods. Instead, press the water out gently or roll the shaper in a clean towel.
4. Dry in the Shade, Not in the Sun
Pakistan's strong sun dries clothes fast – but direct heat weakens elastic and fades colour. Lay your shapewear flat or hang it in the shade to air dry. Never use a tumble dryer, heater or iron.
5. Avoid These Common Mistakes
- Bleach and strong detergents – they break down the stretch fibres.
- Fabric softener – it coats the fabric and reduces its grip and breathability.
- Hot water – the number one cause of a shaper losing its shape.
- Wearing the same shaper every day – elastic needs time to recover.
6. Rotate Between Two Shapers
If you wear shapewear daily, owning two and alternating them lets the elastic rest and recover between wears – so both last longer. Many women pair a lower body shaper for daily wear with a full body shaper for special occasions.
7. Store It Properly
- Fold it flat in a drawer instead of hanging it for long periods.
- Don't fold shapers with rods sharply – lay them flat so the rods keep their shape.
- Keep away from damp areas to prevent odour.
How Often Should You Wash Shapewear?
Ideally after every one or two wears, especially in hot and humid weather. Sweat and body oils can break down the fabric if left too long.
When Is It Time to Replace Your Shaper?
If your shaper has become loose, rolls down more than before or no longer smooths like it used to, the elastic has worn out. That's the time to choose a new body shaper – and remember to check our size guide first.
